Year after year, Summer would come and go. Year after year, I would either have blistered feet, or swollen feet (usually both). I wear open sandals which chafe my feet, ridiculously flat sandals which make me feel like I’m walking barefooted, or covered sandals which range from too tight, to almost falling off (does anyone else’s feet swell in the heat?). Pumps and closed shoes tend to exacerbate this problem. I find bare sandals (with hardly no foot coverage) quite uncomfortable and too exposing (I’m not the biggest fan of looking at my feet!).
The dreaded footwear problem almost made me wish Summer away. I love the sunshine, but unless I went barefooted (Birkenstocks hurt my feet/ I’ve never understood why?), my feet suffer time and time again. Why wouldn’t they make comfortable sandals? Sorry I should rephrase that. Why wouldn’t they make comfortable sandals (sliders) that look good? Yes we don’t mind suffering for fashion once in a while (okay a lot of the time), but nowadays I like to look stylish and feel comfortable (gosh I sound like my mum/ I don’t know if that’s a bad thing!).
Until, one day, somebody mentioned how they’d found the perfect walking sandal. Walking and sandals in the same sentence? I was sold immediately. Not only that, they mentioned they were crystallised. Crystals? I whipped my card out and went into shopping mode straight away. What were these mythical crystallised shoes that were perfect for Summer? Which company had made the sandal of my dreams? It was none other than Fitflop. As soon as I put them on my feet, I just knew this sandal was the one. I felt as if I was walking on clouds (something to do with Microwobble boards?/ All I knew is I was on cloud nine). I could use the underground in Summer, without every passenger stepping on the back of my sandal (how irritating/painful is it, when people walk too close to you and step on your sandal and it almost comes off?). Now my feet could expand and contract as much as they wanted without my sandals feeling too tight or loose (and they look fashionable whilst doing it)! The thick soles provided the perfect platform for my height and prevented my sandal from flipping around (the thin soles tend to flip a LOT). The crystals sparkled in the sun (yes, they were Swarovski crystals). I was comfortable without compromising my ‘stylish’ ideals (I know everyone has a different definition of stylish). The thick band of crystals, give my feet enough coverage for me to feel comfortable. Now my friends, sisters, aunts and even my mum wears these sandals. There is truly no age barrier when it comes to these sandals!
Now every year, I look forward to taking my beloved Fitflops out. I own them in a variety of styles and colours and I love each pair as much as the last. If the price point is too high, I can assure you these are available from anywhere above £25 and last for years (not a single crystal has come off yet!) as they are so well made. The only downside (which comes with wearing any open shoe) is that my feet are so dirty when I come home after wearing sandals (is this just a London thing?). If you’re thinking about investing in these sandals, go for it. I can promise you since the day I’ve worn these, I’ve never looked back. If you have wide/swollen feet, can never find the perfect sandal, or just need some comfortable footwear, I would seriously consider buying Fitflops. I would especially recommend going for the darker shades if you like to keep your sandals for a long time, as the darker colours don’t attract as much dirt (especially if opting for a Suede finish). This is my go to sandal for hot weather, holidays, walking, anything that involves outdoors and heat!
