It’s been so long since I’ve last blogged, I wasn’t quite sure if I knew how to write anymore. Although I haven’t been active on my blog, I have a huge backlog of posts I was meant to post throughout these few months, so get ready for an overwhelming amount of posts in the next few weeks. With the holidays fast approaching, I seem to suddenly have more time to actually sit down and write.
This post about Costa is long overdue. I actually visited Costa for the Christmas drinks, shortly after they were released (November I think). Now I’ve always been a Starbucks girl myself. Sure I’ve visited Costa once or twice (living in Ilford you really didn’t have a choice but to visit Costa until 2016, when somebody heard my prayers and finally opened a Starbucks), but always felt reassured that as always, Starbucks had the better drinks (purely personal choice, I don’t want to start a war with Costa fans). Anyway, as soon as Starbucks opened, I reverted back to my regular Starbucks visits without giving Costa another thought.
When it was suggested that we meet up at Costa to try their new Christmas drinks, I immediately rolled my eyes at the prospect of having to sit through another session of mediocre Christmas drinks. Upon lots of persuasion and insistence that this year’s Christmas drinks were well and truly amazing, I decided maybe it was time to give Costa another chance to redeem itself in the special drinks department.
As we approached the building, my palms were sweaty and I kept glancing back to see if anyone was watching. Reassured that I was unrecognisable I quickly slipped into Costa. The feeling of guilt and shame for betraying Starbucks was hanging over me as I ordered some of the Christmas drinks, and a few snacks. I placed myself on the table and waited for everyone to gather.
I opted for a Mint Hot Chocolate, with it having been recommended by so many family members, I thought I definitely cannot go wrong with this drink. The drink itself was decorated clumsily with whipped cream, by an overtired barista who really just wanted their shift to be over. Eager to take a sip, I slowly savoured my first sip. The mint and creaminess of the drink immediately hit my palette. I felt comforted and warm almost instantly. The texture was quite thick and felt quite milky. As I continued sipping, my initial thoughts faded and the drink from about halfway started to feel quite sickening. The sweetness and thickness became overwhelming and I decided to move on to my snacks.
The chocolate ring was rich and heavy and had a nice crunch to it. If you like chocolaty, crunchy snacks, this is perfect for you. It is nothing to write home about, but I cannot fault it’s execution as it tasted as I would have expected. The reindeer cake on the other hand, was dry and crumbly and most certainly not how I would expect a cake to taste like (it is a dessert I would expect to be served on an aeroplane). I am unsure as to how long it was on the shelf for, but it certainly tasted like it had been there for a long long time.
Feeling slightly frustrated as the experience so far, I decided to try the Gingerbread latte. Now Starbucks Gingerbread Latte is probably my favourite Seasonal drink after the Pumpkin Spiced Latte, so this Latte already had a lot to live up to. The drink itself had a good flavour of gingerbread within it, and the gingerbread on the top was a cute touch. However, the consistency of the drink was far too thin and watery and I was disappointed once again.
I decided if they thinned out the Mint Hot Chocolate further and made the Gingerbread Latte more creamy, I am sure they would be more palatable. I am well aware that each drink tastes different, depending on the barista who made it. Maybe I was unlucky in my experience, or maybe this is how they were meant to taste and I just still don’t like Costa. The whole time I sat there, I could feel Starbucks mocking me for trying the drinks (just kidding). The company was great and all in all, it was an experience. In general the vibe and atmosphere at Costa is quite warm and welcoming, that it is a shame that yet again, the Christmas drinks, did not live up to expectations.
Costa fans, please tell me what I’m doing wrong. Am I ordering the wrong thing? Will I ever be able to like Costa? Is there anything you could recommend? Feel free to comment below.
